RMS Walmer Castle
Passing Teneriffe - 12 noon. Clouds on tip of mountains which spoiled the view. Good view of shore line. Could see the peaks covered with snow above the clouds.
Thursday, 4 April
Arrived at Funchal, Madeira about 6 am. Polly and I with Sir Murray and Lady Bissett and their little boy landed and went to the Esplanade Hotel at top of funicular railway - first by ox-sleigh, then by funicular and down by sledge and by car - very interesting. Breakfast at Esplanade Hotel. Boat was advertised to sail at 11 am, but owing to much cargo storing did not get off till nearly 1 pm. About 45 passengers embarked in 1st class.
Friday, 5 April
Everyone in warm clothes again
Saturday, 6 April
The lions on boat deck covered over with a tarpaulin in case of rain. We passed Finistere about 11.30 am, passing many miles of Spanish coast. Lovely day, warm sun and sea very smooth in Bay of Biscay. A large number of ships on both sides.
Sunday, 7 April
The sea today like a mill pond.
After we had gone to bed at 11.45 pm the engine stopped - supposed we were picking up the pilot at the Needles, but much too cold to get out of bed and see. Very cold at night.
