Week of 26 December 1927

Monday, 26 December 1927

Edwardstone House

Cosh and Leslie were to have come over to lunch but it was too bad on the roads for travel. Leslie told us on the telephone that he had heard that Elsie Cobbold died yesterday morning at Woodbridge of cancer.

Tuesday, 27 December

Leslie and Cosh came to lunch.

Gran stayed in bed today.

Wednesday, 28 December

Pippa was to have gone to a dance tonight at the Simpsons at Stoke by Nayland but decided not to go.

Thursday, 29 December

Everyone went off for walks this morning except me.

I drove in to Ipswich - had hair cut and met Leslie and went on with him to the funeral of Elsie Cobbold at Whitton Church at 2.30 pm. She was buried next to her younger sister in the churchyard there.

Friday, 30 December

Polly drove Gran, Mabel and Sparkes to Colchester station to catch the 2.30 pm train for town but on arrival found the train was leaving and they had to jump into the train and their luggage followed by next train.

My 59th birthday. I had presents from Polly (pair of gloves), Pippa, Betty, Anne and Wilma. I felt rather cold all day.

Saturday, 31 December

All four girls very busy finishing Anne's and Wilma's dances for tonight - Anne a ballet dance in black with pink stockings - Wilma "a lady of long ago", probably Tudor!

At 6 pm Polly, Anne, Wilma and I drove to Holbrook Hall, Mrs St Leger-G?'s place for children's fancy dress parties. Quite good but very cold. Got back 9.45 and had supper. Listened to choir of York Minster till 12 midnight when the big bell of the Minster struck 12.
