Had a nice letter from Travis? Trevor? Clarke offering to do his best to help Pippa find suitable employment.
Friday, 25 October
Polly attended Women's Meeting at the Village Hall, Edwardstone at 2 pm and gave a short address on The League of Nations.

Edwardstone
Pippa and Betty left at 9.45 am for London in Pippa's car piled up with baggage; Betty to go to a room and Pippa to stay at 15 Pelham Court.
Thursday, 17 October
Betty was to start her work in London with the photographic firm today.

Week of 30 September 1929

Saturday 5 October
Edwardstone
Telephone from Betty in London to say they had arrived this morning at Tilbury and that she and Marcus were coming down, so Pippa met them at Colchester and brought them back for lunch. Betty looks very well for her holiday. Polly has a bad cold.
Sunday, 6 October
Polly's cold heavy so she stayed in bed all day. I went to Edwardstone Church and took Mrs Germaine and Mr Smith from the almshouses as they wanted to attend the Harvest Thanksgiving Service and stay for Communion.

Thursday, 26 September
Edwardstone House
I went up to London by 8.35 am train from Colchester. Met Polly at Stewarts in Bond St 11 am, and went with her to select a new overcoat and finally ordered one at Kenneth Durrants? in Conduit St and a new hat in Jermyn St. I went on alone to the Shipping Exhibition at Olympia which was not as interesting as I had hoped, and after fitting my new coat at Conduit St came down by 5.42 pm train.
Pippa took a long drive by herself in her car to Ely - via Bury, Thetford, Brandon etc. and back via St Ives and Cambridge - 140 miles.
Saturday, 28 September
Pippa worked at speed writing and did a lot of writing in the evening.

Week of 16 September 1929

Monday 16 September
Edwardstone House
In evening Polly and Anne to Sudbury for another anti-cold and influenza inoculation, and afterwards to meet Ginger Copes?, a school friend of Anne's from Sevenoaks. A letter from Betty from Basle arrived today, giving happy news of her trip.
Tuesday, 17 September
Swallows flying very high and not so numerous. Pippa, Anne and Ginger procked sloes for sloe gin in afternoon.
Wednesday, 18 September
Pippa drove Anne and Win Cooper? in her car to Walberswick, stopping en route at Ipswich going. They bathed twice with Lil Le Mesurier in the sea.
Friday, 20 September
Polly drove to Colchester and met Wilma in the afternoon on her return from Keasting? near Dover, where she had stayed with the Jörgensens.
4 bottles of sloe gin made today!

Week of 9 September 1929

Wednesday, 11 September
Edwardstone House
In morning Polly and Anne to Sudbury to get paint etc. In afternoon Polly drove Betty to Colchester to go up to London, en route for Basle via Tilbury and Dunkirk. Betty left in her walking kit: thick shoes, beret, etc. and rücksack, with a small suitcase only.

Saturday, 7 September
Edwardstone House
At 2 pm we had the loudspeaker of the wireless set in the garden opposite the smoking room, and for 2 hours listened to a racing account of the Schneider Trophy [prize competition for seaplanes] - most exciting.
