Our Silver Wedding Day
The girls gave us a charming silver mustard pot, Cosh and Ursula a silver bowl, Grant two fine quilts or eiderdowns. Polly had presents from Enid, Lil and Mabel and Eve.
Polly gave me a dressing gown. I gave her a leather coat. Lil, Enid and Mabel gave me each a book.
It was a happy day and I felt much better than I did 25 years ago, when I was suffering from suppressed enteric fever!
Oudtskoorn - George
Sent off our trunks and deck chairs by train. I went with a Mr and Mrs Ross in a car to the Cargo? Caves about 14 miles off - met some baboons on the road. The caves are wonderful and extend for miles; about a mile is lighted up with electric lights. Very hot walk climbing, with inumerable stalactites and stalagmites.
After lunch Polly and I left in a car for George, arriving about 6 pm at the Victoria Hotel which is very comfortable. It was a magnificent drive across the Montague Pass. Very desolate on the north side of the mountain and very green and wooded on the south. We took a walk before dinner. Very attractive little town with all streets lined with ? of oak trees. We attended a cinema in the evening.
George - In the train
Lovely fresh morning. We looked at the Cathedral and walked about and then down to the station, and left by 11.10 am train for Capetown. Had a whole compartment (of 4 berths) reserved for us. Meals in restaurant car. Very interesting journey.

Wednesday, 20 March
Sea Point - Capetown
Breakfast in train - arrived Capetown 9.10 am, met by porter from Marion Hotel who took over all our baggage. We went to Cooks for our mail and to the Union Castle Agency to obtain our steamer ticket and then trammed to the Marion Hotel Sea Point and had baths.
In afternoon we went into Capetown and to Kirstenbosch and the Rhodes Monument.
Sea Point, Capetown - RMS Walmer Castle

We sent off our luggage by hotel porter about 10 am and left the hotel about 10.30 and went into Capetown, bought some ostrich feather fans for the children. We went on board the Walmer Castle about 12.30 and unpacked some of our kit in our cabin - much smaller than the one we had in the Saxon.

A Major V.S.T. Fincken and Major T. Reay came on board to see me, both formerly in the Durham University OTC 1909-1913 with me. They presented me with a book A Tavern of the Ocean. I was very grateful to them for remembering me after all this time.

We left at 4 pm. Perfect weather and sea calm. Capetown and Table Mountain looking beautiful.

The Wilderness
Clouds very low in the morning but as it showed signs of clearing we took our lunch with us and hired a boat and rowed to the "Ebb and Flow" - a river that runs with the lagoon here. It was the most beautiful place we have seen out here. Magnificent trees on each side, myriads of plants of all sorts, some still in flower, huge butterlies, swifts, swallows and all sorts of birds, some in song. We paddled slowly along with our feet over the side of the boat. Got out and lunched beside a tiny cataract? On the way back rowed up river. A most lovely day and not too hot.
Tuesday, 12 March
Made arrangements about hotel accommodation at Knysna by telephone and wrote letters and planned future travels. Lunched in hotel and after tea took a walk along the shore and paddled. A small shark appeared close in when we were paddling. I had a long talk after dinner with Capt. Owen who is blind and minus one arm from an explosion in the mines on the Rand, and who served in Boer War and Great War.
Wednesday, 13 March
A lovely day. We took our lunch out and rowed in a boat up to Ebb and Flow, where we had lunch. We walked along a forest path towards the waterfall.
Thursday, 14 March
Wilderness - Knysna, Royal Hotel
We left Wilderness 9.45 am and drove with all our luggage except deck chair to Knysna. A most lovely drive. Very hot when we stopped half way to have tea - the scenery beautiful - as we climbed up 1000 feet and could see for very many miles in the clear African atmosphere.
It was very hot and so we kept in our room till 5 pm.
Friday, 15 March
Knysna, Cape Province
We left in car with a Miss Pratt and driven by Mr Hildebrand and did a tour through forest via King Edward VII Tree, Buffalo Hoek, Klein River. Lunched at Reade's Farm. Took motor boat trip up Kenuboom? River, then to Beacon Islet in Plettenberg? Bay, then to Bracken Hills? on to the Falls. Heard baboons barking. Saw "Garden of Eden" scenic reserve. Altogether a most enjoyable drive through wonderful scenery of all kinds with views of whole chains of mountains.
Saturday, 16 March
Knysna - Oudtskoorn, Queen's Hotel
We left Knysna by the 6.45 am train with several others, most of whom got out at the Wilderness. We were handed our letters here, also a cable from Gran, Pippa and Betty. The train journey across the mountains was fine, rather spoiled by the clouds on the highest parts. Lunched in train in restaurant car.
Very hot on arrival at Oudtskoorn.
Sunday, 17 March
Oudtskoorn
After supper we walked in town and listened outside Anglican Presbyterian, High Church Wesleyan Church!! Some hymn singing in each!
Very interesting journey over Sir Lowry’s Pass. Left our luggage at station in CAPE TOWN except suit case. Went to Royal Hotel in Plein Street. Arranged about next day’s journey with Railway Tourist Dept. Too late for shops. Fireworks in evening at pier but we did not attend. Polly sent off picture post cards to servants and others. Noise in streets considerable at night. We visited the Municipal Gardens and the Mount Nelson Hotel before dinner.
Polly did not sleep well for the first part of the night. Breakfast in the train. A halt of half an hour at Mossel Bay and then on to George where our coach was detached and put on to another train to put us to The Wilderness, a wonderful newly made railway. We found the Wilderness very interesting. Were given a “RANDOVEL” on our room, a model building of our room with our door and our window and a thatched roof.
